Cuisine and drinks

The cuisine of Montenegro is of a national character. The traditional menu includes soups, roast meat, shish kebab, chopped meat and stewed vegetables. A particular culinary pride is grilled assorted meat. Same popularity is enjoyed by fish and seafood dishes, for example, fish goulash of different fish species. The most popular food of Montenegro cuisine is given by the fertile land: plums, carrots, onions, tomatoes, beans and spinach.

The Montenegrins are true connoisseurs of ham. The best ham is believed to be done in Njegos, a small place near Cetinje. The ham is served as a cold snack, for example, to lozovac, grape home-brew.

Main dishes of the local cuisine include potted lamb meat, special dairy cream (pivski kajmak), clear fish soup, fried and smoked fish, stewed cabbage (sarma), fried meat with sour-crout and moussaka (podvarak). Kacamak is a mild and nourishing dish of wheat, buckwheat, barley or flour mixed with cheese and sour milk. Cicvara is a dish of mashed potatoes and sour milk. Popara is bread mixed with milk, butter and cheese. It has a very interesting taste and does not cost much. Japraci is a delicious, nourishing and high-calorie dish of veal, rice and vegetables.

A Montenegrin breakfast consists of bread and butter and honey or bureki, a puff pie with cheese and meat, lunch includes soup and meat with vegetables as the main course. Salads are usually made of various fresh and pickled vegetables, such as beans, cucumbers, onions, peppers, tomatoes and sauerkraut. The dessert includes fruit and nuts, as well as strudels, pancakes and flaky pastry things.

Near Lake Skadar, in the district referred to as Cemovsko polje, huge centuries-old vineyards cover two thousand hectares. The grapes gathered on these plantations go into remarkable wines of Vranac and Krstac.

Vranac is an excellent dry wine of dark red, almost ruby colour with a pleasant noble fruit after-taste, pure and light. The best snack to this wine will be prshut, jerk and cheese.

Krstac is a dry white wine with a magnificent bouquet and a light yellow colour.

The favourite and the only national beer, Nicsicko pivo, has been made since 1896. It is brewed of barley, water from mountain sources and bitter flavoured hop.
