Sights

The Montenegrin sights of the protohistorical period include Krasna Skala, Berane-karst and Gotovusa. The towns of Ulcinj, Bar, Risan, Dukla, Medun, Kotor still feature numerous remnants of the Illyrian and Roman culture. Kotor has preserved the architectural charm of a medieval Mediterranean town with small narrow meandering streets and strong fortifications 20 m high and from 2 to 15 m wide around the old town. The town walls were erected in the IX-XVIII centuries. They are 4.5 km long. One line of fortifications begins from the South Doors of the port, the other from the Skurda River, from the West Doors. They meet highly over the town at St. Ivan Fortress. One can reach it by going up a steep staircase of 1,426 stair steps.

In the mountains at a height of 900 m, there is the monastery of Ostrog, founded in the XVII century. It keeps the relics of St. Basil the Wonderworker and the Healer. The monastery is Orthodox, but it is actively attended by believers of different religious faiths from all over the world.

The monastery of Cetinje demonstrates ancient Christian relics: John the Baptist's hand and a piece of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, as well as the copies of Octoechos, the first book printed in 1493 by Crnojevic's printing house, the first printing house in the southeast of Europe. Cetinje has preserved the residence of the most popular ruler of Montenegro, Petar Petrovic Njegos (1830 - 1851), by turning it into the Njegos Museum.

St. Tryphon Cathedral in Kotor, the monastery of Moraca, the monastery of Cetinje, the monastery of Djurdjevi Stupovi with a church built in 1170, the monastery of the Blessed Trinity, the monastery of Piva, Savin Monastery (St. Sava Monastery) and the monastery of Ostrog are the most famous monuments of medieval culture in Montenegro.

The monuments of Islamic architecture include Kanli, a tower in Herceg-Novi, Lesendro on Lake Skadar, Mamula at the entrance to the Boka Kotorska, as well as mosques, chiming clocks, baths dating back to the period of Turkish rule.

The ancient city of Belgrade, whose history began about 2,300 years ago, was destroyed 40 times. Belgrade has preserved its fort built as early as in the days of Celts and a citadel. The central part of Belgrade is an esplanade framed with numerous cafes and shops.
